Shadwell, Thomas
(¿1642?, Norfolk, Inglaterra–19 nov. 1692, Londres).

Dramaturgo inglés. Fue uno de los ingenios de la corte de Inglaterra luego de la Restauración (1660) y escribió 18 obras de teatro, entre las que se destacan sus atrevidas comedias de costumbres. Epsom-Wells (1672), su obra más celebrada, estuvo en cartelera durante casi medio siglo. Luego de que su amistad con John Dryden terminara a causa de sus diferencias en el ámbito político y en el de las técnicas dramáticas, ambos escribieron una serie de sátiras en las que se atacaban el uno al otro. Las de Dryden (sobre todo la devastadora MacFlecknoe) resultaron las más memorables. En 1688 Shadwell se convirtió en el sucesor de Dryden como poeta laureado e historiador de la corte real.
